When you update your Butterfly iQ app, you might need to update your probe’s firmware prior to use. Firmware updates adjust your Butterfly probe to be compatible with our latest features.
We recommend enabling notifications from Butterfly on your mobile device so you can proactively update your probe's firmware. We will send a push notification when a firmware update is needed, so you can complete this step before you need to use the probe.
To receive firmware update notifications:
On an iOS device:
- Ensure you are using the latest version of the Butterfly iQ app.
- In the Butterfly iQ app, click your avatar at the bottom right corner of the screen to access your Profile and navigate to Notifications.
- Toggle "Push" to enable push notifications.
- Navigate to your mobile device's Settings.
- Select Butterfly iQ and toggle "Allow Notifications" on.
On an Android device:

If you experience issues with firmware updates or a firmware update failure:
- Disconnect your Butterfly probe from your mobile device.
- Hold down the battery indicator button (for iQ/iQ+/iQ Vet/iQ+ Vet) or the center button (for iQ3) on the probe for 10-15 seconds. If the device has any battery power remaining, the battery indicator will light up for a few seconds, then turn off, then flash three times.
- Reconnect your Butterfly probe to your mobile device and ensure your app is open and Butterfly stays plugged in through the duration of the update.
Firmware updates are performed once after your app is updated and should not reoccur during scanning. If the above steps do not resolve your issue, please contact Butterfly Support.
